Mama – Laundry can wait

Are you like me and feel like you never catch up on housework?  As a mama to three littles, I feel like I cook, clean, sleep and repeat.  It is a never ending cycle.  I’ve been a mom for almost 6 years so I’ve learned a thing or two over the years.  When I look back to the time I only had one child, I got a lot more done than I do now, with three children.  I am a very driven person who loves to do lists and crossing things off.  Over the years, I have had to revise the way I write lists because some days, to do items just don’t get done and I feel very discouraged. Also, when I’m so focused on to do lists, I’m not focusing on what my family needs or what I need.  I am constantly being reminded of this though.  Sometimes, we just need to slow down. The years go so fast!

I had another reminder of this just a couple of weeks ago.  I had sat down to fold 3 baskets of laundry.  My youngest came over with his cup of milk and wanted to be held. I was on the verge of telling him he could sit next to me because mommy needed to fold laundry but then I looked into his eyes and saw that he really just needed to snuggle.  So I pulled him up on my lap, wrapped my arms around him, and watched a show with him.  In moments like this, I know I made the right choice.  Do I always make the right choice? Unfortunately no I don’t and at the end of the day I regret it.  What is more important? Folding the laundry or snuggling with my little boy who will one day be too big to snuggle.  The laundry will wait.  And the worst that will happen is that we use all the clean laundry before it ever gets folded and put away.  Sure it takes up space in my living room but snuggling with my little boy met his needs that are much more important.  After all, he has feelings, the laundry doesn’t.

Sometimes it is the simplest actions that make the biggest impact!  This was a wonderful reminder to focus on what truly is important.  Motherhood easily can be overwhelming so we just want to get something accomplished and be able to move on.  Whether it be the laundry, the dishes, or picking up for the 18th time today, let’s remember the simplest & slowest moments are the most important moments we have with our children.
